Training Session

By William Lau, Shanghai, China

What a great opportunity to serve!! I finally got to work in the gospel field outside Shanghai. To me, it was quite an eye-opening experience. I can see the hunger and thirst for God’s Word in the eyes of the training students. I was greatly encouraged as well from their love and devotion to the teaching of God’s Word despite relatively limited material resources.

During the training session I felt, I myself, was like one of the students participating in the class. Furthermore, it was great to be able to spend some valuable time with Ed Gross alone so we could discuss some of the difficult questions I have regarding the Bible teaching. At the end of the training, I was invited to attend a youth group fellowship at one of their local churches and I was asked to do some sharing with the group. It was unexpected, but simply following the guidance from Holy Spirit. I found that there was a great need for training of young Christians leaders. The church is growing fast in terms of numbers (giving the big population in China), so there is an urgency to increase the level of spiritual maturity, so they in turn can lead and train up others.

I thought the 2-day training went well. A few young students were very sharp and knew the Bible really well. A big asset is Timothy, the main teacher; he's very godly, and is obviously putting a lot into the Bible training school which I could tell by his chalk diagrams on the blackboard. He's the one to latch onto for the future. He has schooled the students well and they were great at handling the Word. He also has a heart for them. He told me that SOME of them had a serious spiritual life. He was obviously trying to be gracious in the Asian way.

William Lau, as the commercial says, is priceless. Give me ten of him and I'll conquer the world! He has a great heart for God, a hundred questions, and an unquenchable thirst for Bible knowledge. We were true brothers when I left. He's also a good translator.

Thanks for all your hard work in putting this together and allowing me to come. It was a great blessing, and I'd love to help more in the future. It's always my preference to train actual or future pastors, as they're the difference-makers. But I'll go through any open doors or windows where China is concerned. –the end
